Boxes have arrived

by plantgirl on April 25, 2008

Yesterday my square foot garden boxes arrived. I got these off of www.squarefootgarden.com along with a tomato tower and some water walls. I ordered the small 2×2 patio boxes for portability and because they can be placed on a table if needed. All New Square Foot Gardening, by Mel Bartholomew, has complete instructions for building boxes, planting and harvesting. After finishing this book in February I have continued to refer to it because the advice is so good and simple for a beginning gardener like myself. I started my seeds in March with the Burpee Ultimate Seed Starting System, which has a self watering tray.

The tricky part has been tracking down all the different kinds of compost recommended in the book (supposed to use 5 different kinds blended together). So far everyone including my local grocer has steer manure but only nurseries seem to carry the really good stuff. And it isn’t cheap. I’m also still trying to track down coarse vermiculite. Apparently medium vermiculite is a lot easier to find in the big 4 cubic ft bags. Peat moss is easy, everyone has it.

Tomorrow is planting day and I’m ready to get started!

Cool Plantgirl! Being the carpenter type family that we are I had tons of help building my beds so I didn’t buy them like you, but what a GREAT idea! They look amazing and they’re all ready to go. Can’t wait to see the plants all in their squares!

I read all the way down to here and have enjoyed my visit very much. This is an interesting project and I look forward to seeing how it progresses. An amazing amount can be grown in these small areas. I will check out Square Foot Gardening’s web site. Found you on Blotanical.
