Rose Pictures & Upside Down Tomato Planter

by plantgirl on May 20, 2008

I went on a rose planting spree about the same time as my strawberry spree and here are the results, in this digitally altered picture. Why digitally altered? For some obscure (meaning I can’t remember) reason, lavender/mauve/purple roses don’t photograph true to color. So I photoshopped this picture because these babies are NOT pink! I’m sure the color is still off but it’s a lot more accurate than the original.

Anyways, the light solid rose on the left is an Angel Face Floribunda rose - and it smells incredible, especially the more it blooms. Seriously, I have never had a lavender rose that smelled so good.

The one on the right is a Purple Tiger Floribunda rose and I LOVE this rose - it is so awesome looking. People really look twice at it. The smell is pretty subtle - this one is really about looks - but there is some citrusy aroma. I know this blog is about Square Foot Gardening but I can’t resist showing off these lovlies!!

Purple Rose

Here is a night shot of my upside down tomato planter. It’s been so hot we took the plastic off it although if tomorow is cold like Mr. Weatherdude predicts we’ll just end up sticking it right back on. Hubby noticed the tomatoes were starting to curl up. Well I did some research (online of course) and found out this is normal until the tomatoes get bigger and “bush out” more. But it seems they need to be checked every day to make sure they aren’t growing right back up through their soil - how crazy is that! It feels very experimental but seriously cool to grow them upside down. I’m going to be growing 5 varieties in the regular square foot garden. A lady from church told me today that her biggest problem with tomatoes is they don’t all ripen in time - I found some red plastic stuff that is supposed to help them ripen faster, so I may get some eventually.

Today I also (finally) planted the rest of my strawberries. I’m hoping they do OK because the container I got wasn’t very tall.

I have some lavender roses and they are so fragrant! I planted so many roses in the back yard not knowing the names of any of them.

That’s interesting about planting the tomatoes upside down. I have a strawberry plant which never grows strawberries. Any suggestions on that?

Peace,
Susan

Susan-
Lavender roses are my favorites - I am addicted to them.
Not sure about your strawberry plant - I’m planting them for the first time this year. What variety of strawberry is it? I also read that the red plastic stuff you can put under tomatoes for faster ripening works with strawberries too.
Thanks for visiting my blog :)

I’m not sure about the type of strawberry, a neighbor gave the plant to me when she moved. I’m thinking maybe there’s some fertilizer or plant food I can feed it.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!
