Seedlings & Strawberries & Organizing my Squares

by plantgirl on May 19, 2008

The seeds I planted directly in square foot garden boxes for beets, Swiss chard and spinach are finally coming up!! Meanwhile, it’s been HOT outside. Tomorrow it is going to be almost in the 90’s then Wednesday will go back to normalish at 60 degrees. Been working on my garden while my 2 year old runs through the sprinkler.

Today I noticed powdery mildew on one of my strawberry plants, probably from overhead watering. OK, I think it is powdery mildew. Am still so new at this - I could be way off. But it’s white, on a few leaves and matched a picture I found online. I read to remove the leaves. Anyone have experience with powdery mildew on their strawberry plants?

I also did some mulching today because it’s been so hot - even though I’ll probably end up removing it later this week. The weather is CRAZY!! One of my strawberry plants has fruit almost ready to pick - yummy. Need to find bird netting for them though.

I really really really want to start making compost. I’ve been reading about composting at Sinfonian’s blog and am seriously jealous! Every time I throw away anything that could be composted I feel so wasteful. Soon, soon. I should probably have my baby before undertaking another project!

Speaking of projects, I’ve been working on my SFGs with excel spreadsheets. I like not having to flip through the book to see basic info about seed starting dates, maintenance and watering. When I get some time I’ll post the spreadsheet I made for all to see. How do you organize your SFG? I’m a bit of a “write things down” sort of person - I know my garden could work just as well simply putting plants in it - like my husband does things. I’ve also seen several forum and blog posts lately wherein people visually block in the squares - often color coded. I’m interested to see the way others organize their SFG’s. My Mom just plants stuff - she doesn’t get hung up on writing it down. I guess I’m more of a documenter myself.

Well thats all for now - next post I should have some pictures up.

Hi, I am new to SFG. Just started this year. I am currently using a notebook to record the squares and their contents, but am planning to move to a spreadsheet.

S Nair -
that’s exactly what I did - started with a notebook then moved to a spreadsheet. I’m discovering more and more though how fun it is to be spontaneous and just plant stuff when the mood strikes - though a little planning never hurt anybody. :)
