Upside Down Tomato Plant

I have been wanting to post about my tomatoes all week - I only got one bite of the above tomato, which Hubby gobbled the rest up. YUM!!

Here are my heirlooms, slowly coming along. I think this is the Cherokee purple. I really want to try some of that red plastic mulch stuff which may make them ripen faster. I also haven’t sprayed them much with blossom set spray that I bought awhile back - will be experimenting with these.

Here is some basil happily growing in front of these various tomatoes

And finally a picture of the upside down tomato planter with basil growing on top:

Upside Down Tomato Garden

I am trying an organic plant food that I found at lowes - dry stuff I sprinkled around each plant then watered in. Hopefully things progress a bit quicker!!

Also ate a few tiny beets from the garden - they were pretty sweet. Turns out my 2 year old loves ‘em - who knew??

What kind of plant food do you use?

Hey, at least your tomatoes are ripening at all. Mine are still green and they’re “Early Girls” hehe. I too would like to try the red mulch, but I haven’t heard of an organic spray to help them along… unless you’re thinking of compost tea.

Wow, so THAT’S what basil plants look like. Mine died after repeated attempts. And they say basil’s easy to grow. ha!

Oh wow, I love that upside down tomato with the basil growing on top. How creative! Gotta let me know how it turns out! I’m especially interested in how the production compares to the right-side-up plants, hehe.

Thanks for sharing!

Sinfonian - Most of mine are still green except for dh’s - which he gets first dibs on LOL I have a spray not sure if it is organic or not - called tomato and blossom set spray - says it is a natural plant hormone product.
Did transplants for the basil - I’ve discovered I’m not so good at growing anything from seed. Thanks for your comment :)

Hi pg

I use a liquid fish emulsion called Alaskan on my plants and feed them some every couple of weeks.
I even put some half strength on the flower hanging baskets when they start to look a bit weary. It works a treat.

Mick.

What a cool upside down planter. I’ll have to try one of those next year. Beets are delicious, so glad that your 2-year old likes to eat them. I used organic miracle grow plant food… something like that.

Your tomatoes look great. Ours’ aren’t producing much now due to the heat here in Vegas. I’ve never tried the blossom set spray but am considering it. I normally feed mine with the Alaskan fish emulsion (stinks badly but seems to work) and use a kelp mixture as a foliar spray.

Mick - I’ve seen that alaskan stuff and wondered what it was - will try it out thx!

DP - I think mine is just like the miracle gro - it was a bit cheaper lol

John - kelp mixture - have heard of that think I’ll try it.

I am not much good at starting things from seed either. With the exception of course, of beans, melons and squash. I love your upside down thingie. I have my tomato plants in for all now, so although we are slowed way down on tomatoes, we should have more soon. I love pickeled beets. Mama used to hide the jars of canned beets from me when I was little. LOl

I grow square foot garden style with a bit of a Ruth Stout twist.

Hi PG

Thanks for the comment on my blog. I didn’t realise (all blogging aside), that you were a writer, you must tell me more.
