Green Tomatoes

by plantgirl on August 18, 2008

Today my 2 year old picked a whopping 3 tomatoes that were still green. We tried explaining that we don’t pick the “baby tomatoes” - they don’t taste good. When I caught her she got a cute mischievous look on her face and teasingly reached for an almost ripe one - then ran away giggling. I have a feeling this is a lost cause - she loves to pick strawberries too and even ate the unripe ones (and liked them).

I’ve left a little square in my box for her to dig around in - she loves to help :)

I love fried green tomatoes - but only one of the 3 she picked is really big enough for it so I don’t think I’ll bother. Maybe next year I should try a little fence around my garden LOL

I am thinking about getting some chickens. Anyone have any experience with chickens? It is very popular throughout Utah - although the laws are very strange. Chickens are allowed in Salt Lake City. They are not allowed in West Valley City. And in Salt Lake County (which is way more rural than Salt Lake City) they are only allowed if you have at least a half acre. So we will see.

Our neighbor down the street got a goat - which seems a much bigger deal than getting a couple of hens for my fenced back yard!!

Yesterday we went hiking up a little trail - I think it was called Mill B North - that was up Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was gorgeous up there. I was very nervous - I had the baby in a moby wrap and we went up the tiny little trail - part of which was a stream with very slippery rocks. My balance was off and I went *very* slowly - hubby and my 2 year old were way ahead of me. At the top was a pretty waterfall - not huge but very pretty. My 2 year old was a bit scared but very brave and on the way back we saw an old abandoned mine - she wanted very much to go inside even though it was pitch black in there and freaky looking. She threw a fit of course when we didn’t go inside.

Then we went around the road to find the Mill B South trail but couldn’t find it and hiked on some other trail until the baby started to cry then went back.

Last night we had a hot dog roast outside and looked at our tiny little garden with all the green tomatoes and talked about what to do next year.

I’m gonna miss summer.

Chickens! How awesome. I’ve never had any chickens, but I am guessing they will be loud, but cute!! Will you be killing them and eating them? Or just have them lay eggs?

We’ll just be having ‘em lay eggs - no roosters, only hens so *hopefully* not too loud lol

Sounds like an interesting hike. BTW, has baby got a name yet?

Planting your kitchen in the backyard is interesting thing to do. It also makes your kid active.
