I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the hens hadn’t laid eggs yet, and probably wouldn’t through the winter - when I heard a strange noise coming from their coop. We had stopped checking every day - anyways I looked in their little laying boxes - 11 perfect medium brown eggs!!! I am soooo excited. It happened about 10:30 - so that is the time I will need to check every day. Woo hoo! As soon as I find my camera I’m taking a picture of these cute little eggs!
In my garden, the birds are getting fed off the dying sunflower seeds - tomatoes are still ripening slowly despite colder weather, and my beets and some of the strawberries are doing well. Also the swiss chard - as soon as the weather started cooling it began growing like crazy. It’s almost time to prune my roses - everyone has their eyes peeled to the local forecast as one day will be too warm for a jacket and the next it might snow.
I heard if I put a light in the chicken coop it will keep them laying all winter - any ideas about caring for chickens in winter?

That’s great that your chickens are laying eggs. I would love to raise some some day.
Eggs??!! We need pictures!!
That’s great pg, I’m glad your “girls” have come up with the goods.
Sorry I know nothing about raising hens but maybe they needed a little time to settle into their new abode eh?
Wooot! Congrats! Yay, eggs… I bet you’ll be in the yokes now. Very cool. Comment on how they taste please so we can live vicarously through you. hehe.
John - they are surprisingly easy to care for
Mick - I just found my camera so MUST post pics soon
Sinfonian - The yokes are more orange than store bought - they don’t have that weird egg smell either.
How exciting! I’d love to see pics too.
