Heirloom Tomatoes

Heirloom Tomatoes

We went camping Thursday Friday and Saturday at Palisade State Park, for DH’s family reunion. DH rented a comfy motorhome and despite the baby’s all nighter with teething it was a relaxing trip. We got back Midnight Sunday. Yesterday I went to check on my tomatoes - most of which are still green - and was excited to see a few turning orange. I got a late start this year and am surrounded by other people’s ripe tomatoes - call me green with envy.

But in the back hiding behind all the others I found a yellow brandywine perfectly ready to be eaten - it was green when I left. This is the first tomato I found this year growing and I’d been hoping it would be the first to ripen. It was large and delicious - eaten in slices with a bit of sea salt. DH and DD went gaga over the lucious thing - it was sweet with just a little acidity - perfect for a yellow - warm from the sun and extremely juicy.

Today DD and I went to check on them - I warned her several times not to pick the “baby tomatoes” - I think she took me literally because she picked a very large, very green Radiator Charlie’s Mortgage Lifter tomato - I took it inside and stuck it in a paper bag and am trying to stay hopeful. Any suggestions?
