As much as I love having bees flourishing in my garden, they are starting to wear out their welcome. With the garden right by the back door and having to leave the door open to be able to watch my 2 year old DD1, the bees are becoming a nuisance. Two flew in today in the 30 minutes I had the door open and I caught them both in a cup and let them go outside. Finally DD1 came back inside so the door could be shut. Any ideas on contolling the bee population (without harm to the bees?)
Meanwhile, the beet seeds I planted a week ago are starting to really flourish. Baby has had colic and I hadn’t been able to post as much - I found the perfect remedy for her though - bouncing on an exercise ball. Puts her out like a light.
Will get some pictures up soon.

I visited the Farmer’s Market last night and bought a ton of supersweet cherry tomatoes, crookneck squash, tiny zucchini, fresh corn, and super yummy peaches. Tonight I made fritters cooked in olive oil from the tomatoes and zucchini and from store bought fresh dill (ouch was it expensive but worth it!) and mint from my garden. When it’s too cold to grow stuff outside I *must* grow some herbs in my kitchen window, don’t know how [click to continue...]

I harvested these beets last night and washed them while watching “Nim’s Island.” It’s a cute movie though it lost my attention 3/4 of the way through. These beets turned out alot better than my last harvest - I think because of the ladybugs doing bad bug control. Only some of the leaves had been eaten and only a bit of those - so I washed them all and gave the slightly [click to continue...]

Chickens in their new coop
2 nights ago we found a local ad for chickens - and took the plunge! The above not so good pic is of the 6 hens I bought from a local lady downsizing her flock - I also had 2 roosters (conditional to get the nicer hens) but had to give ‘em away for free - don’t think the neighbors would like the noise.
Got 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocs, 1 Silver Laced Wyandote, and 1 unknown/mixed breed (very pretty too). The girls haven’t started laying eggs yet - I was told they [click to continue...]

Today my 2 year old picked a whopping 3 tomatoes that were still green. We tried explaining that we don’t pick the “baby tomatoes” - they don’t taste good. When I caught her she got a cute mischievous look on her face and teasingly reached for an almost ripe one - then ran away giggling. I have a feeling this is a lost cause - she loves to pick strawberries too and even ate the unripe ones (and [click to continue...]
