I told my sister in-law today that next year I want a whole 4×4 full of strawberries, and another full of tomatoes. Maybe at least half of one for beets. And the one I have now? Squash, peppers, and other climbers. It’s times like this I start wishing I lived in Florida or some other place I could garden year round. But this is where I live so guess I’ll make do…grrr. My 8 lb 6 oz 18 inch long baby girl was born on Saturday (her due date!) after about 10 hours of labor. I had her natural which was painful but only the last hour or so. So excited she is finally here!!! [click to continue...]

Thought I would post while I still can … I am now 38 weeks (as of tomorow) pregnant - and my ability to bend has vanished. My beets are almost ready, and there has been consistent cold weather here in Utah (where are you summer??) which means that my spring plants are still doing good. My first house had a little patch of dirt by the deck out back where I attempted, almost a year after moving in, to start a garden. I had big plans. First I tried to start seedlings in the sunny windowed atrium of that funny house, where I promptly forgot to water them and they all died. Yesterday I found one of my strawberry plant’s had died and my spinach has not grown - and it is now (finally) getting too hot for them to do good anyway - so I will probably just pull them up and put something else in.
My beets were doing good - until I became too focused on checking my strawberry plants and turned to see my 2 year old had pulled most of them up. She gave me her intent “I am a good helper!” look and what could I do? Seconds before she had been gently patting the dirt down around some very established strawberry plants. I have to admit I don’t appreciate this sort of help but it still was cute.
